The human health is under a great threat with the increased use of glyphosate. What is even worse, foods which have never been sprayed also show presence of this compound.
This is mostly true about grapes that serve to produce organic wine.
Glyphosate is the main compound of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. It is also the most popular and widely use chemical that serves to spray plants.
First used in 1984, this herbicide has served as the most used pesticide in the past 10 years.
In stores, organic foods and beverages should be glyphosate-free, but new studies show this is not entirely true.
10/10 Wines Tested Contained Glyphosate
In America, a fan of the advocacy group Moms Across America anonymously sent 10 wine samples for testing for glyphosate. Shockingly, all tests came back positive for this compound, including organic wines.
Glyphosate direct link to wine
Luckily, glyphosate does not get in touch with the organic vines whatsoever. Still, it reaches them through the ground and spreads on both sides of the grape vines.
According to Moms Across America:
“These results in a 2-to 4- foot strip of Roundup sprayed the soil with grapevines in the middle. According to Dr. Don Huber at a talk given at the Acres USA farm conference in December of 2011, the vine stems are inevitably sprayed in this process and the Roundup is likely absorbed through the roots and bark of the vines from where it is translocated into the leaves and grapes.”
In the organic vines case, this chemical managed to affect them through the nearby and non-organic vines.
Another factor for contamination is the levels of glyphosate found in the soil where the vines grow. This chemical can stick in the ground for more than two decades.
Glyphosate Detected in 14 German Beers
A German study recently found that glyphosate was found in 14 best-selling German beers.
The 14 beers possessed around 0.1 microgram which is over the limit allowed in drinking water.
Around 29.74 micrograms per liter of this chemical was found in the Hasseroeder beer, while 0.46 micrograms per liter were found in the Augustiner beer. Although no tests have yet been conducted on American beer, it’s likely to be contaminated with glyphosate as well.
Further tests were conducted by Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse, noting glyphosate is almost widespread in the organism and was detected in the urine, bloodstream, breast milk, drinking water, etc.
“Das Reinheitsgebot” is a law enforced in Germany that enables safety of the product after consumption. Here is what The Local noted on the issue:
“‘In contrast to our colleagues abroad, German brewers don’t use artificial flavors, enzymes or preservatives,’ said Hans-Georg Eils, president of the German Brewers’ Federation during a Berlin agricultural fair.
This pushes for a more organic production of beer, as per Frank-Juergen Methner, a beer expert for the National Food Institute of Berlin’s Technical University.
‘In times of healthy nutrition, demand for beer which is brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot is on the rise too,’ he said.”
Glyphosate May Cause Cancer and Other Health Concerns
The worst aspect of this chemical is that it is actually declared an antibiotic. Its main purpose is destruction of bacteria that affect the soil and plants.
Scientist Anthony Samsel, Ph.D. took a deeper look into labeling glyphosate as a biocide and an antibiotic. He conducted a study on poultry and found out this chemical annihilates healthy gut bacteria and makes room for harmful bacteria to penetrate.
Additionally, Samsel remarked that if glyphosate is taken orally, it can cause distortion in the gut microbes’ balance. Furthermore, this can lead to pathogens presence.
His study also revealed that Monsanto was aware even back in 1981that glyphosate can trigger cancer in rats.
Monsanto noted himself that glyphosate is a Class 2A “probable human carcinogen.”
Remaining research explained that glyphosate could also:
- Increase the human breast cancer cells production
- Impair the endocrine system along with severe reproduction damage
- Activate brain damage and toxicity in the area
- Interrupt the normal performance of sex hormones
- Result in birth defects
How can Glyphosate become even more toxic?
The largest number of studies’ focus on glyphosate was in its breakdown product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Still, certain inactive compounds were found to be equally dangerous.
Back in 201, a study pointed out that many inert ingredients, including solvents, preservatives, surfactants and many more are labeled inactive but still bring negative effect on the body. They are creators of ‘silent’ toxins which impair the organism in the same extent.
Other compounds in glyphosate-like herbicides were labeled as “active principles of human cell toxicity,” increasing the negative impact of glyphosate.
Here is what was written in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health:
“Pesticide formulations contain declared active ingredients and co-formulants presented as inert and confidential compounds. We tested the endocrine disruption of co-formulants in six glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) … All co-formulants and formulations were comparably cytotoxic [toxic to living cells] well below the agricultural dilution of 1 percent (18 to 2000 times for co-formulants, 8 to 141 times for formulations).
… It was demonstrated for the first time that endocrine disruption by GBH could not only be due to the declared active ingredient but also to co-formulants.
These results could explain numerous in vivo results with GBHs not seen with G [glyphosate] alone; moreover, they challenge the relevance of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) value for GBHs exposures, currently calculated from toxicity tests of the declared active ingredient alone.”
Avoid Glyphosate in Your nutrition
To get the best precaution measure against herbicide and pesticide exposure is to turn to an all-organic nutrition. Also, you will need to pay a few bucks to install a solid water filtration system at home.
In case you were exposed to this chemical, the lactic acid bacteria created together with the fermentation of kimchi could be of help.
This means that fermented foods must make it on your everyday diet list, so the body can be detoxified promptly.
Going organic is more than essential nowadays, for multiple reasons, including staying protected against the consumption of chemicals. make sure to choose well and to always know the origin of your food or beverage. You only have one health- and it is worth saving it!
