Strips of light skin on the bum, the belly, under the arms and on the breasts can be really hard to deal with for some women. These are usually referred to as “stretch marks” and occur after sudden weight gain — during pregnancy, for example. But there are other causes as well including extreme weight loss, muscle-building exercise, and growth spurts during puberty.

People with weak skin tissue should be aware of these factors if they want to avoid stretch marks. But there are also things that can be done to prevent them, e.g. rubbing special oils on the belly during pregnancy to moisturize the skin and stop it from tearing.

But even if you already have some stretch marks, you can still do something about them, especially the thin ones. Here are 12 natural ways to keep those stretch marks in check…

1. Aloe vera

This plant is full of vitamins and is famous for its healing powers. But most people don’t know that it can also be used to visibly reduce pregnancy stretch marks. Simply rip open an aloe vera leaf and rub the gel on the affected skin. Let it soak in for 10 minutes and then wash it off.

2. Sugar

Sugar can be used to make a natural peel which can help to reduce stretch marks. Mix 1 tsp of cane sugar with almond oil. Rub the mix on the affected skin and let it dry (it’s best to do this before taking a shower). Repeat this daily for one month and you’ll notice great results.

3. Castor oil

This oil is not only only good for stretch marks, you can also use it to reduce wrinkles and age marks. Rub some on the affected skin and wrap the area with plastic wrap (e.g. bum, legs, belly). Now lay a hot water bottle on the area to get even better results. Let the oil soak in for at least 20 minutes.

4. Tea tree oil

Due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties, tea tree oil is perfect for treating skin problems such as acne or stretch marks. Mix some tea tree oil with some coconut oil and massage the mix into the affected skin. Let is soak in for 10 minutes and then wash it off with warm water.

5. Exercise

Too much strenuous exercise can cause the skin to tear, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do any physical activity. In fact, it’s quite the opposite — sit-ups and crunches tighten the abdominal muscles and help to reduce stretch marks. Swimming is also good for keeping the skin in shape.

6. Lemon juice

Fresh lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent and can be used to lighten skin affected by stretch marks and make them less obvious. The acid in lemon juice also helps to remove dead skin cells. Simply cut a lemon in half and rub the cut side on the stretch marks. Let the juice soak in for 15 minutes and wash it of with warm water.

7.  Alfalfa

Mix some alfalfa powder with camomile oil to form a thick paste. Massage the paste into the affected skin three times a day and those stretch marks will soon be a thing of the past. The alfalfa leaves contain numerous proteins and vitamins E and K, all of which are beneficial to healthy skin.

8. Potatoes

Potatoes contain a ton of vitamins and minerals that help the skin regenerate faster. Cut a potato into slices and rub them on your skin for 10 minutes. Let the juice soak in for a few minutes before washing it off.

9. Olive oil

Olive oil contains lots of antioxidants and nutrients which make it great for treating skin conditions. Simply massage some warm virgin olive oil into your skin and let it soak in for half an hour.

10. Cocoa butter

This is unusual moisturizing cream that increases blood circulation and helps to reduce stretch marks. Massage some cocoa butter into the affected skin twice a day for three months and you’ll be amazed at the results.

11. Egg whites

Egg whites are rich in proteins and collagen, both of which help to strengthen the skin. Remove the yoke and beat the egg white. Apply it to the stretch marks and let it soak in for 15 minutes. Wash it off with some warm water and you’re done!

12. Water

If you don’t drink enough water, you run the risk of getting wrinkles, pimples, and those dreaded stretch marks. Water is extremely important for our skin and helps it to maintain its elasticity. Try to drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water each day to keep your skin smooth and your body healthy.
