Getting enough sleep is extremely important for our wellbeing. Not getting proper sleep can be a factor leading to diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer.
As important as the quantity of our sleep is, the quality is just as essential. To make sure that our sleep is as restful as possible, many people believe that sleeping naked is the best way to go. And there are actually five good reasons why this is true…
1. Body temperature is regulated
When we sleep, our body temperature automatically drops. Wearing thick, warm pyjamas disrupts this natural bodily reaction. This can lead to a restless sleep, which leaves you feeling less replenished the next day. Sleeping naked ensures that your body temperature doesn’t get too high.
2. Sleep hormones are released
A balanced melatonin level guarantees healthy sleep. This sleep hormone is regulated naturally when we sleep naked. The surrounding lighting and room temperature play vital roles in the creation of melatonin. Ideally, the room should be completely dark and should not be warmer than 69.8° F.
3. Stress hormones are regulated
Cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” and is very important in various metabolic processes that take place in our bodies. If you get too warm under your blanket, your cortisol production increases. A high cortisol level leads to a ravenous appetite (and long-term weight gain), increased nervousness, and tension. By regulating body temperature, sleeping naked helps to keep cortisol levels low.
4. It increases our sense of wellbeing
When you sleep without pyjamas, you help your circulation because the blood can move more easily through your body. This makes you feel better and, as a result, you sleep better. People who suffer from sleep disorders should definitely try sleeping naked.
5. It strengthens the relationship
Relationships can also benefit from nakedness between the sheets. When someone’s partner lies in bed naked beside them, the sex hormone oxytocin is released. This hormone leads to feelings of happiness and has a positive effect on our sleep. It also strengthens the human bond and, therefore, the relationship.
If you’ve always slept “in the buff,” you’ve probably noticed some of the health benefits listed above. But for those of you who have always insisted on PJs, why not give it a try? It might take some getting used to, but in the end your body will thank you!
