Eating healthy is challenging at times, thanks to the amazing flavors that some of our favorite unhealthy foods tempt us with. But what if someone told you that you didn’t have to compromise, and that you could enjoy the delightful flavors that some of these foods offer, while still eating healthy?

Onion rings

Onion rings are one of many people’s favorite side dishes. It goes great with a lot of meals and giving it up might be a little too hard for some. Luckily, there is a great way to alter the original recipe and make it healthier.

You can use a Japanese breading called panko for the rings, mixed with some Cajun seasoning. This combination is great and the ends result will be very tasty. Once they are prepared, simply throw them in the oven and let them bake rather than fry in the fryer. Here’s the full list of ingredients:

  • ¼ inch onion ring slices
  • ¾ cup of panko
  • ¼ cup of frozen, thawed egg product
  • ¼ tsp Cajun seasoning (if you don’t have Cajun you can also go for barbecue seasoning)
  • 2 tbsp of buttermilk

Chicken parmesan

People often times refrain from this dish because of the high fat that comes along with frying the food. Additionally, the breading used can also find quite a comfortable spot on your hips. But there is a way around these inconveniences. First off, bake it instead of frying.

This will make a world of difference. That no-no breading will also be coming down, replaced with crushed cereal flakes.  Next up is the list of everything you’ll need, which isn’t a whole lot different from how you usually would make chicken parmesan.

  • 1 tbs of water
  • 1 lbs chicken breast
  • 1 cup of bran flakes (cereal), which are crushed
  • ¼ cup of grated cheese (parmesan)
  • 1 tsp of Italian seasoning (dried and crushed)
  • 1 minced garlic clove

These are just two examples of how you can incorporate some of your guilty pleasures into your healthy lifestyle, and how you don’t need to always compromise in the attempt of being both healthy and happy.

The power of baking over frying is something everyone should look into more, as it can do wonders when combined with some great ingredient choices.
