Have you heard of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)? This bacteria is found in the digestive tracts of two-thirds of the world’s population. It causes ulcers in the lining of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine. These ulcers can cause bleeding, infections, and for some, cancer, says WebMD, though symptoms also include heartburn and bloating.
You get the picture. This is serious stuff. So here’s how to reduce your chance of infection and the home remedies to fight H. pylori:
1. Yogurt. According to a 2003 study, probiotics, which are found in yogurt and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi, may help in the fight against H. pylori. Include probiotics in your daily diet to prevent this dangerous bacteria from interrupting your life.
2. Ginger. University Health News reports ginger is a natural antibacterial that can help kill the H. pylori infection.
3. Red pepper. This is another anti-bacterial that fights against H. pylori. University Health News says the specific compound that makes a difference is a substance known as capsaicin, found in a wide range of hot and mild peppers. If you like spicy foods, dust cayenne pepper over a meal once daily.
4. Olive oil. Dr. Mercola‘s secret against H. pylori is olive oil. This is because olive oil is a powerful antibiotic that remains stable even in the most acidic of conditions. To incorporate olive oil in your daily diet, get in the habit of substituting butter in all cases for olive oil.
5. Cranberry juice. There is fantastic evidence to suggest 250mg of cranberry juice daily can prevent H. pylori from causing infection. The Canadian Society of Intestinal Research says this is because cranberries have more antioxidants that other dark fruits, including blueberries and plums. It should be noted however, the study was funded by Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc.
6. Green tea. The flavonoids in green tea prevent the growth of H. pylori and are known to protect against stomach cancer. The Canadian Society of Intestinal Research says that in addition to a daily cup of green tea, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, and carrots can also protect against H. pylori.
7. Oats. The Canadian Society of Intestinal Research reports a diet high in fiber prevents ulcers and protects against ulcer diseases. Good sources of fiber include oats, flax seeds, barely, oranges, apples, and carrots.
8. Liver. Turns out eating liver and other vitamin A-rich foods, like kale, spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots, can reduce the risk of developing an ulcer. According to The Canadian Society of Intestinal Research, Vitamin A works by increasing the production of mucus in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing the development of ulcers.
