Moisturizers and tumor formation
In the study researchers examined the relationship between moisturizers and tumor growth in mice, that are considered to be at highest risk of developing skin cancer.
The researchers used four popular brands of moisturizers during the study. These are Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin and Vanicream. 100 milligrams of each moisturizer is applied topically to mice, that were exposed to UV irradiation once a day, five days per week, for approximately 17 weeks.
Overall, researchers concluded, The use of these commercial humidifiers in mice, that were exposed to the risk of skin cancer is increasing tumor growth by 69%.
This research was a breakthrough in respect of the safety in the testing of moisturizers before they are put on the market, having previously moisturizers were tested only for irritation and their effect on the immune system and have never been tested for carcinogenic activity.
Researchers believe, that two substances commonly found in popular moisturizing creams are to blame for the increased growth of tumors. One is sodium lauryl sulfate, which is known an irritant, while the other is a mineral oil, which is known to stimulate tumorigenesis – formation of cancer cells.
Argan oil. This oil is extracted from the fruit of the argan tree, which grows in Morocco. Rich in vitamin E, in addition to being able to alleviate the symptoms of dry skin, may be used to treat wrinkles, psoriasis, and eczema.
Olive oil. Olive oil is one of the most popular natural moisturizers, again thanks to the abundance of vitamin E. But what makes this so special moisturizer that actually protects from skin cancer. One study looked at the effect of topical application of olive oil on mice, which have UV-induced skin carcinogenesis. Researchers found that reduces growth and size of skin tumors, due to the antioxidant activity of the oil.
Pomegranate. Pomegranate extract proven to protect skin from dryness and premature aging caused by sun exposure. This effect is due to the active ingredient in pomegranate called catechin – natural polyphenol and antioxidant.
